THE MARQUESSES OF BUTE; PATRONS OF OPULENCE

The Marquesses of Bute rose to prominence during the eighteenth century. The extraordinary buildings of the scholarly third Marquess include Mount Stuart, his own home in Scotland, once memorably described as being “like a head on collision between the Taj Mahal and a Victorian railway hotel”. This lecture looks at both personalities and buildings, and examines the Bute’s legacy of craftsmanship and creativity.
Matthew holds degrees from the Universities of Nottingham and Manchester and is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. He was Curator of Cardiff Castle for nearly 30 years.
